A wise person once said, “you are not fully dressed without great hair”. Mbali Mncwabe of Kiddies Korner Hair Salon carries this ethos every day.
After finishing her graduation programme as a fashion buyer for a big chain store, Mbali decided to join the Awethu incubator.
“When I applied for the incubator I didn’t have a business. I only had an idea. Awethu helped bring my idea to life.”
The Kiddies Korner Hair Salon opened on 20 February 2016. It was born out of the desire to provide children with a pleasant salon experience. “I didn’t like seeing kids crying at salons and having their hair done by people who cater to adults, not them. That’s why I decided that a kiddie’s themed salon would be best.”
Mbali’s salon goes beyond just the haircut. Her aim is to create an experience. This is evident in the decorations, the lollies she gives children while they get a haircut and the follow-up calls.
Even though she has been faced with tough decisions since opening the salon, her passion for hair and the incubator training keep her going.
“I have to wear many different hats and I am winging it a lot. I am grateful to Eddie Gumbo for being my mentor. Eddie gives me timelines and offers a lot of guidance.”
For Mbali, success not only looks like franchises all over the country but includes upholding great service and keeping her customers happy. “Bad service doesn’t exist in my books. I want parents to leave my salon having had a great experience and therefore bring their kids back,” she says.
Her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is “Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili” meaning: those that know will lead you the right way.
